A few weeks ago I received my set of Sgt. Steele and the Dogfaces from Eureka USA. When I saw it, I thought 'what a wonderful set of pulpy WWII GIs, I could probably make a whole detachment out of that'. An idea I've been kicking around using Ginger "Snaps" as a War Correspondent. Non-Combatant - Model is not armed and may not engage in any attack, but can defend if attacked. Model may not hold any objectives. "Get your picture on the cover of Time" - If this model is within 6" and facing a model when it achieves an objective and this model survives until the end of the game, then a Secondary Objective is awarded. This can be a good tie-breaker as despite both sides achieving Primary Objectives, the one that gets their picture in the papers wins. "I want Mom to See This!" - Once per turn, a single model within 6" of this model gets a free re-roll (Drive Test, RC or CC test, etc.). Results of re-roll must be adhered to, even if worse than first roll. All units within 3" of this model get a +1 DR. I was thinking a Regular or Veteran Training Level as the special abilities seem kind of powerful. Only one per army, irregardless of the number of detachments involved would be allowed. Not sure about upgrading with a Hero Template, not sure if too many would be of much use.

Those rules sound reasonable. Isn't there a hero type that gives you a free reporter? I think it is the movie star one. Those are pretty cool minis, and I was thinking the same thing about making a whole detachment out of them as I looked at the pictures. edit: On closer inspection I now realize why these guys are called the 'Dog Faces.' Most of them are pretty poorly sculpted in the face area, Angel being the worst offender. It may just be the photos, though.

War Correspondent is a unit type I thought would make a nice touch, but we already had so many new units in the Occult Book it'll have to wait.

I've got the figures and I don't think the faces are poorly sculpted, just that they have a more comic book style to them. The whole set is sort of inspired by the old war story comics like Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandoes.
Perhaps a War Correspondant might make a nice addition in a future Over the Wire. I'll have to work on fleshing out the stats.
Make note: Another project added to list.

Yeah the Movie Star template give you two War Correspondents. But basically it's just a couple of extra grunts, just like the Soviet Criminal template.
I thought my proposal sort of gave it a little more flair, I'll have to admit I borrowed the "I Want Mom to See This!" from the Starship Troopers Miniatures game.

Some interesting rules so it is. Would it be even like a two man unit, one war correspondent and a GI or something, just so he doesn't get shot?
And If I remember correctly for the Movie star template, I think it actually says they're GIs assigned to him as a bodyguard. Nobody wishes to read that John Wayne has been shot.

And If I remember correctly for the Movie star template, I think it actually says they're GIs assigned to him as a bodyguard. Nobody wishes to read that John Wayne has been shot. Right, they're reporters with rifles. More like a bodyguards than photographers.

I guess I was thinking of more like Ernie Pyle and Walter Cronkite. Did any of them carry weapons?

Yeah I was trying to balance between all the special bonuses and combat abilities. I figured if he could fight, he'd be too kick ass.

OK here's my first swipe at it. Let me know what you think.
War Correspondent (Regular Infantry) M RC CC A S DR W 3 NA 3 3 2 4 2
Composition: 1 Civilian War Correspondent Equipment: Camera
Special Abilities: Non-Combatant - Model is not armed and may not engage in any attack, but can defend if attacked. Model may not hold any objectives.
Get your picture on the cover of Life Magazine! - If this model is within 6" and facing a model when it achieves an objective and this model survives until the end of the game, then a Secondary Objective is awarded.
I want Mom to See This! - Once per turn, a single model within 6" of this model gets a free re-roll (Drive Test, RC or CC test, etc.). Results of re-roll must be adhered to, even if worse than first roll. All units within 3" of this model get a +1 DR.
Only one War Correspondent per Detachment may be selected. Model may be upgraded to Veteran Training Level. Model counts as one Infantry Selection for purposes of Support selections. Model cannot be upgraded with a Hero Template.
Designer Notes: This is more of a support model in that it boosts Drive and improves performance. Also, if used right, works as a bonus tie-breaker for gaining objectives. The trade-off is lack of combat and that it takes a regular or veteran selection. However I allowed it to count as an Infantry selection for purposes of Support as I thought otherwise would be too restrictive.
I opted for no Hero upgrade, as most seemed very combat related and if this model didn't fight most would be wasted. However, some may apply with interesting applications. Also, perhaps a Hero selection may be used to arm this model with a weapon and an RC attribute.
