Glad it all became clear! Now, just post up some of your creations so we can see what you come up with.

That's a good point. I'll take a stab at putting an info graphic together that explains the detachment/crew building system.

That would be a great addition to OTW... Perhaps something that could be a standard feature for the future? I mean, once in a while some questions come up on the forum that might be better explained with some pictures?

That's a good point. I'll take a stab at putting an info graphic together that explains the detachment/crew building system. Excellent, it fills me with a warm glow to know that the diagram suggestion may be of some use. ;D Sorry to be a bore but can I run this by you all, as soon as I try to get a crew together I get a little confused again; Vet Crew; 2 Vet slots, 2 Reg slots. For me to use a Vet unit's option to upgrade to Elite I must upgrade one of the Vet slots to Elite by losing one of my other unit slots, in this case it would be a Reg unit or Vet unit that takes the fall. Correct? As soon as I started looking at the free options available to each Individual/squad's profiles I got mixed up and wasn't sure if the option to upgrade to Elite or Vet was something I could do freely without having to remove a unit to upgrade the slot but I'm pretty sure that isn't the case. In a Vet Crew it is only possible to have one Elite unit - would that be correct? I can only remove one unit and therefore can only upgrade one unit to the desired level. I'm sure I've got it now but just need the reassurance from you guys. Thanks

You got it. So, in a Veteran crew, sacrificing a Regular slot could give you: 1 Elite, 1 Vet, 1 Reg (-1 Reg, Vet goes to Elite), 1 Hero choice, 1 dirty trick; 3 Vet (-1 Reg, the other Reg goes to Vet), 1 Hero choice, 1 dirty trick; 2 Vet, 1 Reg, 2 Hero choices (-1 Reg choice for extra Hero), 1 dirty trick; or 2 Vet, 1 Reg, 1 Hero choice, 2 dirty tricks (-1 Reg for extra dirty trick)

Yes correct, to all three questions. The free upgrades are made within each unit selection and are weapon and gear upgrades etc, and these has nothing to do with sacking the template choices to either change TL or take an extra Dirty Trick for example.

When I remove a unit I can only choose ONE of the options, is that correct? So, for instance, I sacrifice a slot and can choose either to upgrade another slot to a better experience lvl, OR I can choose to spend it on an extra dirty trick, OR an extra hero, or downgrade to a lower EL. I can't sacrifice a slot and get all of these, just a choice of one of them? Thanks again, you've all helped me through the "rules fog".

One slot for one option, yep. Some crews (or detachments in AE-WWII) may have two options available for them.

Thanks Cilionelle, thought so. All good, now to get on, design a crew, paint up some minis and get playing! Thanks everyone.

Darkson really did a bang up job when designing force building for both their games. It's quite different and unique, but once you get a grasp on it, it's almost too simple.

Too simple... perhaps, but never a dead give away on unit composition. Because flavour, idea and concept are the foremost gradiants in selecting a force it seems, so you can never be too sure what your opponent will bring to the table.
