Engineer units: What would they be armed with. What type of game function would they have?

Repairing a vehicle is kinda silly. Even replacing a busted tread link can take a really long time, and it's certainly not something you do during in an ongoing battlefield.

So they would be more along the lines of demo crews, mine layers, guys that blow stuff up.

Perhaps they could give a bonus to fixing a broken vehicle in the game. Kind of like a Tech Priest or Tech Marine?

No, that isn't very realistic. Any reasonable damage to a vehicle besides jammed guns requires extreme specialist tools not available in the middle of a battle, especially a small skirmish.
Engineers should be armed with rifles and demolition charges, with an option to take flamethrowers or mines.

they should be able to blow key positions/ buildings up and plant mines. fixing up tanks takes a long time.

Think, explosion of strongpoints is purpose of engeeners on the battlefield. To my look it`s a single work wich they realy can do in a game. Optionaly, they can have an access to experemental weaponry such like a "terrible X-ray gun" or "mighty battle robot" ;D Joke. I just like a retro sci-fi and if something in this style will appear - it`s good.

I'm thinking along the same lines " explosion of strong points is purpose of engineers on the battlefield" these guys might have some cool gadgets to get the job done.
