Hello,
I was just looking over the crew building lists, and I had a question about the difference between a large crew and a veteran crew.
The only difference I see is that a vet crew has: 2 vet, 2 reg
And a large crew has: 1 vet, 2 reg, 3 green
Now my question is, why wouldn't I just take a large crew, swap out the 3 green units and end with:
1 Elite, 2 veterans. Or even 3 vets and an extra dirty trick...
which, as far as I can tell is a better option then what I can get with the vet crew.
Am I missing something important?
Thanks!

Yes, you are missing that you only get a certain number of "Options" to use. Usually only one, although I believe that there are some crews that get two. While I don't have my book here in front of me, I am pretty sure that the large crew doesn't have enough Options to trade out all three Greens.

Hmm... I see what you're saying, but is that how it works? That means I can only alter each template by one option?
When I read it, it comes across that you can move things around as much as you want. But what you said kinda makes more sense and makes each template more reasonable...

Which ever way you work it it comes down to the number of Action Points and Dirty tricks available to the crews (for all the crews it's 11), this is what ultimately seems to make the crew balanced. Any way of getting around this by taking a large crew and swopping the low AP greens out for higher AP slots makes the crew unbalanced. But then again looking at the two examples you've come with they both have 11 too (Elite=4, Vet=3, Dirty trick=1), so I'd say try them out and see if they work too.

But If I took: Large crew 1 vet, 2 reg, 3 green
I (maybe) can make it into 3 vets and 2 dirty tricks, which is one more dirty trick then possible with the vet crew...
I thought the same as you... that everything would eventually boil down into the same thing... but this seems like it has one more 'point' than the other crews...

but 3vets @3ap=9 plus the two Dirty Tricks =11. Unless you're swopping a green slot, then whenever you swop a slot you're going to loose out, making the choice harder. So yes you gain an extra slot if you did the same with a vet crew, but I guess it doesn't make that much difference. Now what I'd love to see is a 1 Vet, 1 Reg, 5 green template. Go with pirates and a massed horde of Arges!

Right, but the Veteran crew is 3 vets with 1 dirty trick which = 10...
I'm just thinking the vet crew is underpowered compared to the other crews...

Personally I prefer either the vet or the standard crew. I find the large crew hard to use due to the number of green units (though I've only tried it with pirates) and the 2 man crew to have too few bodies. My favourite crew right now is a merc standard crew, with the green slot traded for an extra hero, giving me a Brute Sergeant, an Assassin Sniper and two Hired guns units.

Actually, the Veteran crew is two Vets, two Regular. It's just that by using an option, you can upgrade a Regular slot to Veteran.

Right.. but if I wanted to do that why wouldn't I just take a large crew and use the 3 greens to upgrade to 3 vets and a total of 2 dirty tricks?

Yeah, but as noblehero said, you only have one option. I'd recommend getting a hold of the rule book and have a look for yourself! It's a good read!

I have the rulebook in front of me...
Under the general description of Crews:
"Players have the option of removing one or more unit selections and exchange them for the following..."
Emphasis added is mine, but doesn't that suggest that I can move around as many units as I want?
In the Options under Two -Man crew (for instance) it says "Players have the option of removing one unit selection and exchange it for the following..."
Before it was pointed out that it might mean only one option per template, I took that to mean that I can exchange as many teams as I want, but for only one thing at a time...
That's where my confusion lies...

Ah, I see. As far as I understand it, it means only one option. If otherwise, I'm sure a staffer will jump on and correct me. If your reading is correct, then it changes the whole way crew creation's handled.

That means you could remove 1+ slots in exchange for one (1) of the following...
So I could drop 3 green and gain 1 of the following... or
I could drop 2 green and gain 1 of the following... and finally
I could drop 1 green and gain 1 of the following...
Is that what it means when it says "...removing one or more unit selections...?"
Essentially, it's not a 1:1 exchange ratio. It's 1+ to 1 ratio.

That seems like a reasonable explanation too I still see it as a little vague (or i'm just easily confused), I would like to hear a staff person weight in....
