Hmm, I thinka one off gauss gun or very limited numbers might work. But I get what you mean about sci fi, particuarly after Void.
The nailgun though is a fantastic idea.

Quake I has a lot of cool weapons that will fit in very well with this game and feel. Very lowtech and very painful . I've just found out the Nailgun was based on a real German weapon, the Gast Machine Gun...how cool is that! Other cool Quake I weapons are the Supernailgun (rotary barreled) and the Thunderbolt (AKA Lightning Gun). The nailgun could have nice effects like pinning enemies to walls, destroying vehicle tires, etc.

The lightning bolt might turn up in the Tesla weapon. Have a look at this baby too: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ripper_GunAnother gun that might be interesting is the shock rifle from Unreal Tournament. The possibility to not just wound or kill but to blow someones body back a few metres woulkd be deadly to enemy morale! Does anyone know how UT's Flak Cannon (or should that be Flak Kannon! ) works? That might be interesting too.

Talking about the Ripper...remember the Ripper Gun from UT? (Basically a gun that fires buzzsaws...that would be an AWESOME weapon. You could incorporate rules about decapitations and stuff).
And the text about the Flak Cannon on Wiki: Flak Cannon: Similar to a shotgun, but far more powerful, the flak cannon is a squat, huge-bore weapon which fires a burst of glowing, molten metal shards. It causes tremendous damage at close range, but its effectiveness drops off rapidly with distance. These shards will bounce off of any surface, which can enable players to hit other players around corners. The shards cool after about a second, losing their lethality. However, stepping on cooled but still existent shards will slightly damage players. The alternate fire ejects the entire flak shell instead of smashing it, which flies through the air and disintegrates on impact into a burst of shards. Should the player be on the recieving edge of one of these alternate fire flak shells, looking at it as it approaches, the player can see a smily face drawn on it.

Oh gods yes. I ended up playing the original recently and I'd forgotten how fun the Ripper was- particuarly for the explosive buzzsaws! I also quite like the idea (nicked shamelessly from Paolo Parente) of men carrying thos hand held buzzsaws as assault weapons.
Cheers for the flak cannon info. Makes me think of some kind of multi barelled shotgun (rotary?) or explosive rounds. Or even a shrapnel gun.

Shrapnel Gun sounds cool for the Russians: cheap to use amo for *shoves some rubble, brass casings and fingers in the barrel....BOOM!*

Bingo- sort of like Winter Guard only more hi tech and a little nastier (and hopefully with models with better shoulders!)
