Hi Guys
I am new here and have been looking for a game for a while now that really grabs me in both background and ruleset but without too much luck.
I have bought and downloaded quite a few rulesets now and am yet to find the 'right' game.
My first question is ... what's the smallest amount of models you can get by with and still have a fun and balanced game? and what is the smallest sensible board size ?
TIA

I think a 4' x 4' play area would be about as small as you'd want to go to get a decent game in. You want room to maneuvre after all.
As for models, it depends on your play style. If you want only a handful of really hard troops, you might build a detachment with as few as five or six models. I like a bit of firepower, so I usually get some regular or green troops to spray lead, but even then, I don't think you'd be looking at more than 15 models tops for your detachment.

First off welcome to the forum robf.
So I have been playing with this in my head for a bit. The anwser to how few would be 4 miniatures. You would use a Command Detachment and it would look like this:
Elite Office (Assassin Hero) Vet SD Sniper (Pathfinder Hero) Vet SD Sniper (Archaeologist Hero) Reg SD Sniper
Special Orders: Artillery Support/Tertiary Objective
The story behind this Command Detachment is this is a very specialized group scouting ahead of a main force looking for artifacts that may be useful for turning into weapons for the SD.
The Officer has been selected for this mission as he is a trained killer (equipped with a strength 5 MP40 ouch). Your Pathfinder SD sniper is your guy that moves quickly through even the most difficult terrain with ease inorder to get the best shot on prime targets. The SD Sniper Archeologist is there to be your bullet magnet at the visiable front of the force supported by your regular SD Sniper.
Any one of these guys is able to call in Artillery Support and reign hell on the opposition. The Tertiary Objective is to help you gain an advantage by being able to select what you want to go for to help score victory points.
This is a nasty surgical detachment where you will beat your opponent by picking off his units starting with the Officers and working your way down reducing Drive of the entire force with no way to recover.

Wow. I was pondering this myself a bit back, but you, sir, are a criminal mastermind.

Suppression and/or hidden deployment will do a serious number on that detachment. However, that doesn't erase the fact that it's naaaaasty.

That's the point of AE. Everything has a balance. Anyone else want to give the Sick/Themed/Over the top detachment build a try?

This was my very first detachment:
Experimental Detachment Elite Airborne Officer (Rocket Hero) Vet Buffalo w/M1919 Reg Rocket troopers (tesla pistols) Reg Rocket troopers (tesla pistols) Reg Rocket troopers (tesla pistols) Green Robot Troopers Green Robot Troopers
The end result? Playing a game with Matt and I said:
"Sorry, dude, I think I broke your game."
There was soon a new rule in Over the Wire about officiers lifting Suppression.

We rely on hannibal to break things.
