Since random direction is not really defined in AE, what method do you use? We use a deviation die from Aberrant Game's Rezolution. It's a handy die for determining d6 based range deviation. If you haven't seen it, it consists of a large clear d6 with 1-6 pips on it and a smaller d6 with arrows on it on the inside. Then we roll this, and if required an additional normal d6, near the target point to determine range and direction. Another method has been to roll a d10 along with the required d6s and the direction the d10 points is the deviation direction.

I have a d10 with arrows on each face from, uh, Void? Urban War? Something like that.
The Rez die is too noisy for me, and hard to read. Heh.

Rez dice only because I have one and somehow dont have a GW scatter dice (I have just about every 40 core rule book back to the soft cover Rogue trader but no scatter dice... just strange)

a lot of people tend to "lose" scatter die. I have both the rez scatter and gw one, have to test it out sometime.

I just use a GW scatter die as well. I kinda like to look of that Rez die, though. I have a thing for odd dice. I have a d100 that looks like a golf ball and sounds like it is full of BB's. The only problem with that Rez die is that you end up rolling 2d6" for scatter so often that you are going to be rolling multiple dice a pretty often anyhow. Still, for a buck-fifty you can't go wrong. Does it have a hit side on the scatter part?

spinespur has a good method, though it requires 3d6. had large template with the numbers 1-12. 2d6 for direction and d6 for distance.
