A warm orange glow filtered through the frosted panes of a second-story window in the cold of a winter night. Seated next to the window, an attractive woman sat peering over a collection of books scattered on an oak study desk. Alexia brushed the hair from in front of her glasses as her eyes followed her finger along a line in a dusty book she was studying over. The light from the gas lamp next to her on the desk was ill-suited for any serious studying, but it got the job done. She stopped briefly as another elegant tendril of soft brown hair fluttered past her vision. With a sigh she sat back and with both hands pulled her hair into a ponytail. Inching her wooden seat back up to the desk she bent over the book again scanning the words. The book was old, probably thirty years old, and it was filled with schematics that probably meant more if they were written in another language. It was a physics book she had used to work on her doctoral dissertation during her years at MIT in Massachusetts. At this time, Albert Einstein’s relativity theory was shaking the whole physics world with its ingenuity and sheer oddity. It was an exciting time to be a doctor of physics to say the least.
Deep in thought she perused the ancient tome line by line. She had a work plan hurriedly drawn nailed to the wall above her desk with a diagram of what looked like some sort of train on it. Finally, her finger stopped on an equation with the words ‘frictional coefficient’ labeled above it and scribbled something down on a lab book next to her. Closing the book in a puff of light dust and coughing slightly, Alexia sat back with her arms behind her head and gazed at the diagram. She paused for a minute, deep in thought, and then got up leaned over to the diagram on the wall and scribbled in what she had written down in her book on the diagram. She sat back down and leaned back again, this time gazing out into the wintry night through the window.
Four months ago she was doing research for a benign railroad company and now, four months later, she’s somehow caught up in a secret branch of the United States government doing war research. Time, she thought, ticks by too fast, she could barely forget her freshman year in college and now she was all grown up and doing research for what they say might be the biggest historical event in all modern American history. She almost wished she could believe Einstein’s theory and its mystical implications that time may not even exist. All that was beside the point now though, she had to busy herself with the god awful work of war so that hundreds of thousands of American lives wouldn’t be lost. She sighed and leaned forward.
A soft whine broke her from her reverie. Leaning forward she realized she had totally forgotten about Archimedes lying comfortably in a lump under her desk. She scratched behind his ears and whispered softly, “Hungry aren’t ya?” His eyes glistened and his mouth opened slightly. The big brown dog followed Alexia as she stood up across the carpeted floor of the room.
Alexia had tall brown leather boots on with her khaki pants tucked into them. She had a slender figure with a beautiful pair of long legs and nice womanly hips. Her brown hair was long and hung down in a ponytail between her two shoulder blades over her white cotton shirt. She had suspenders on and, if it weren’t for her girlish figure, one would have mistaken her for a man considering her dress. The dark green suspenders and boots were standard OSS uniform as well as the khaki pants and white shirt. The eagle and ‘USA’ in gold embroidery marked her shirt just above her left breast. Her shirt was unbuttoned slightly, revealing a soft white neck with a silver chain and a pendant around her neck. Her shirt was neatly tucked into her pants enough to allow the outline of her ample breasts to be seen. If it weren’t for the black rimmed thin glasses at the tip of her nose and the ponytail, she would have easily been confused with a store model or movie star. Obviously meaningless to Archimedes, the dog trotted happily at her feet eager to be fed.
