A trend amongst Warhammer 40k players has been with playing with so called "Pre Heresy" armies which are basically a prequel to the original setting of Warhammer 40k. The potential of a prequel is cool since we can explore the storyline and find out why things are now as they are. Warhammer 40k does this with the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy novels and I was thinking how cool it could be to do sometihng similar for AE-WWII.
Some might yell that we should do WWI, but I think that wouldnt be that effective since with WWI I always get a steampunk vibe for some reason and AE WWII is very much a retro/dieselpunk universe. Much of the groundbreaking tactics used in WWII were first tested in the Spanish Civil War and we have the same factions (sort of) fighting in the Spanish Civil War as in WWII, its fascism against capitalism. (sort of allied with communists/anarchists/etc) While Im not suggesting there should be an entire modelline done for the Spanish Civil War I believe this does offer players some cool modelling and gaming potential. The Spanish Civil War in this universe could be very much the same as the original war, but way more experimental! Germans are for the first time testing out their weird troops and weapons, there might even be some unit types which we dont see in AE WWII because they have proven to be ineffective in the Spanish Civil War (which means players could now play with them) Certain units would not be included since they havent been invented yet. It would also mostly be a war between the Republicans and Nationalists (gives players a great oppurtunity to model figures for) with the support of German and Soviets units. So Germans fighting for the Nationalists and Soviets fighting for the Republicans. You might even include some US volunteer units, so paratroopers/etc who have unofficially joined the war since the US was isolationist during that timeperiod.
Experimental units might also mean more dangerous units, stuff that can blow up easier or cause more collatoral damage.
Am getting a bit too ahead of myself again huh?
