how about mutant guys with like loads of arms and heads and stuff. Mutants are almost more cliched than zombies. Also, multi-armed figures generally look like idiots and are very difficult to model and paint well.

Okay mutant is probably something extreme, I would more call them a psychotic suicide unit, pumped up with drugs which makes them aggressive and strong, however the Japanese havent mastered the dosage and kind of drug that well yet which makes these "lab rats" simply too psychotic and frenzied to even use a rifle, they just run towards anyone and tear them apart (sort of basic instincts and motorskills)
