This week we went with a "seize the objective in the center" mission. Since the board we chose had a river winding through it, the mission became to nab the half destroyed bridge in the center. To spice things up, we made the river impassible. Royal, as always, is our photojournalist, as well taking the role of lone commander of two German detachments as Jeff and I commanded an American detachment each.

With the river winding through the lower left section of the field (American perspective) and only a single bridge to cross it, this hindered the American advance. Good thing there were rocket troopers!
Americans, from left to right: M20 and rocket troopers on left bank of river. On other side of the river: rocket troopers, rocket hero, robot troopers (on the bridge crossing the river) and rcoket troopers. On the center, left the mortar team took position behind the forest. The second unit of robots and the Recon robots took the center in what would become known as "suppression alley." On the right flank, the airborne officer took position to the right of the hill holding the church. Cresting the hill was the Buffalo and the ARPA mechanic. On the right side of the hill the airborne squads took position.
Germans (L->R): Most of the Germans took position on the right side of the river. A lone unit of skinnies took position on the far left behind a hill to stymie the American advance. On the center left the German mortar took position behind a house. The two sturmaffes, the rohlingsoldats, the mad doktor, a German officer, the Krieghunds, and a unit of skinnies all stood at the far end of Suppression Alley. The Sniper took position on the forested hill with the two Wehrmacht squad on the right side, ready to duel with their airborne equivalent on the other side. Somewhere in there floated another German officer.
The first half of the battle was basically just the two sides manuevering. The rocket troopers zipped across the river, taking cover as they did so. The M20 advanced and managed to fail its handling check on the only patch of woods standing between it iand dominance of the whole left flank of the board. It floundered, being fixed, then failing its Handling checks, for the rest of the game.
Meanwhile, the German doktor doped up "Otto" and "Mongo" with the same results as on the Eastern Front: Mongo the Sickly tok 2 wounds while Otto the Unstoppable gained +2 strength. The sturmaffes raced forward into the center of the field. The American mortar scored a lucky early shot, rolling an 11 for damage and killing one German officer and putting 2 wounds on a Rohlingsoldat.
On the right flank, the Buffalo crested the hill, getting a commanding view over Suppression Alley. The airborne and wehrmacht advanced on each other. However, the airborne realized there was little to gain for advancing where the Krieghund could charge them and the assassin would see them through the forest. So they fell back for a bit. They were lured back out later when the Krieghunds rounded the hill and could charge almost anything (killing the field mechanic, tieing down the Buffalo for a crucial turn, etc). So the airborne came back, killing the Krieghund but suffering from some return fire in later turns.
On the second turn, out came the Artillery. The German artillery strike killed two Robot Troopers while the American one deviated away from any serious damage (can't remember if it hit anything). It's because neither of them were firing at me.
On the left flank, the rocket trooper advance was slowed by the fact that they had to give the emaciated squad a wide birth. There was no doubt that their hit and run attacks would kill the emaciateds but it slowed the whole detachment down for a crucial period of the time dealing with them. One rocket trooper squad was sighted by the rohlingsoldat who had ghosted left by the building, and was suppressed. They would never leave the building, pinned down. Meanwhile, a unit of rocket troops and the rocket hero killed the last emaciated and took position behind a forest on the left side of the hill where they could take pot-shots at the Rohlinsoldat and german mortar team.
In the center of the field, the emaciateds advanced, but were perpetually pinned down by the four robot soldiers there. Even Otto the Unstoppable was pinned down for a bit while the Buffalo inflicted wounds on it. However, Otto crested the hill and was driven Berserk. We ruled he would walk with his APs through the rubble. He took a swing at the Buffalo but failed to wound. The field mechanic, knowing his carbine couldn't hurt the Buffalo, fired into combat to kill Otto. He hit the beast and killed it! Now all the Buffalo would have to do is survive a round of pummelling.
Meawhile, Mongo raced across the objective bridge and charged the robots on the left flank, smashing one. The other robot tried to break away, but could not. The free robot fired into melee but missed horribly.
On the right flank, the German sniper (who had been hindered in difficult terrain most of the game) got free and fired at the Airborne officer. Two shots, a 2 and 1. Then a 6 on the damage which, with Assassin, meant a dead Airborne officer.
In the center, a unit Wehrmacht shadowed Mongo and took the central bridge. All they had to do was hold it for a turn. A unit of rocket troopers that had never advanced very far (got stuck in some woods) hopped out from behind a building, shot, then hopped back. They got the hopping part right. The shooting-the-enemy part, not so much. However, the robot squad on the center-right suppressed the Wehrmacht, which would send them scurrying off the bridge for cover.
At this point, we called it. The store was closing and it was turn 5. We decided it was a draw, because the only unit that might be able to claim the bridge at the end was the rocket troopers and that would come down to "who has more activations" so the rocket troopers wouldn't get shot. The Germans had the mad doktor nearby so he might have been able to claim it, and thus it became a question of who can hold it. So we decided to call it a draw.
It was an interesting game. A bit dull in the beginning because we were manuvering so much. The consensus was too much cover on the field, made it hard to move. I feel it was the opposite. For example, my rocket troopers had islands of safety that required me to expend a lot of energy sprinting into position. Overall, it was a good game.
