We have been getting some great questions regarding Darkson Designs and I thought I would post the Questions and Answers here for everyone.
1. What other lines are you working on right now?
We are currently only focusing on the AE-WWII line of miniatures. We have been playing around with some ideas for a western pulp line but that will not happen any time real soon. We are having German Greatcoats, American Airbourne and American NCOs sculpted right now. A tentative release date of sometime in November.
2. Will the Russian concept/test sculpt ever be available?
Yes. This was the test sculpt done by our sculptor to see if he would have the ability to sculpt for our line. We loved it so much that we purchased the sculpt and had it sent into production. Since the sculptor used a different kind of putty (red) the sculpt melted in the production mold making process. We were finally able to get the sculptor to send us another copy of it and we should receive that any day. We will then put it into production and have it available for release by mid-October at the latest. Since this was a test sculpt it is approximately a 25mm scale, so this will be a one-off special edition release.
3. I heard this concept/test sculpt was scratched and "replaced" by the current russian models. Is this true?
No, the test sculpt will be released as well as more Russian models just like this one will also be released in the AE-WWII line.
4. Alternatively you could release just a set of heads, based on the concept/test sculpt.
No head packs will be released for this test sculpt, since it is a slightly smaller scale. We will however be releasing separate head and weapon packs for the German, Russian and Americans in the very near future, before the end of the year.
5. As a company what is Darkson Designs all about?
Darkson Designs started out as a one-man painting service for miniatures for the last 10 years. Then “Darkson” (Robert) met the “Designs” (Crystal) side of the business. She turned it from just a simple painting service to a full blown business. About a year ago we started playing with the idea of producing a painting guide. Crystal ran with the idea and made it a reality, as we were told by many that it was impossible to self-publish a book like the Painting Guide. Through the creation of the book and the great contacts made, Robert was able to branch out and do something he always wanted to do, create his own miniature line. From this idea AE-WWII, Unknown Tomorrow was born.
6. What kind of style do you want your AE-WWII universe to portray?
AE-WWII is a blend of 1950’s Pulp Science Fiction stories, Paolo Parente’s DUST, and the Bastard Child of History. Robert wants it to feel like it has some of its roots drawn from history but then twisted to meet his odd concepts of a sci-fi pulp world.
7. Tell us a bit about your models?
The AE-WWII, Unknown Tomorrow line of miniatures is the direct result of Robert’s ideas, the Darkson artists’ concepts and the sculptors’ portrayal of it. Robert had a firm vision of how the miniatures needed to turn out and the artist and sculptor have been very successful in making that vision a reality.
One of the main aspects of the miniature line is the true 28mm scale. Our interpretation of true 28mm is that it is a realistic 28mm scale as oppose to a heroic 28mm scale. If you were to put our miniature next to a Space Marine you would get the feeling that the Marine is a 9 foot hulking beast. If you were to use GW tanks you will get the feeling that we have nailed the proper size in comparison to the tanks. It will look like 12 troops could fit into a Chimera. Their weapons are also not over sized comic book style but a very realistic scale when placed in the miniatures hands.
Another appeal to the miniature line is they are all multi-part miniatures. They each have separate heads, arms and weapons making the complete line interchangeable. This also gives our clients the greatest versatility for creating their units how they see fit.
