So, another Wednesday-night battle. Man, I got hosed.
I played a support detachment with an elite mechanic, officer with rocket hero, rocket troops, bazooka, two units of GI's and the super-awesome new Tesla Mortar from the occult book (think BIG electric blasts). John in his deviousness took a command detachment with two units of krieghunds, veteran sniper and two officers each with the Hound Master hero type from the occult book (they get big dogs).
We got escalating engagement. My bazooka and mortar started on the field with the officer coming in on turn one. John started with his two officers and the sniper coming on. Turn one was the ONLY awesome turn I had. The Tesla mortar dropped the bomb on his Elite officer, killing him instantly (I rolled awesome, like I always do with my mortars); unfortunately the doggie wasn't hurt. Moving around, that was it.
Turn two saw one of John's TWO 'scout' krieghund squads pop in right next to the mortar (well, within charge range for the dogs) - down goes the mortar. I bring the rocket troops on next to the krieghunds and hose them with the Tesla pistols. His other officer and mine exchange some shots. The sniper tries in vain to hit my officer who didn't know he was standing so close to the window (that was close). The loose dog moves into position to charge the bazooka or the rocket troops.
Turn three gets even lamer. Krieghund squad number two appears in the woods 10" away from the bazooka team and charges the bazooka. The rocket troops kill the big dog but then one of them goes down to the handler of the dead dogs. My GI's come in on the somewhat empty left flank in an attempt to get his other officer but then find themselves face-to-face with the other big dog. Sniper maneuvers to get another shot on my officer but once again misses.
Things go downhill from there. The GI's get charged by the big dog, who kills one. The German officer kills another and, due to 'frightening' of the dog, the last guy surrenders when he's activated towards the end of the turn. The last rocket trooper gets hit but not killed by the sniper. Bazooka gets munched. The second GI squad comes on and takes a few shots only to have their Drive hit zero once the other GI squad routs. Lame.
Because the game ended on Turn 6, John didn't get the delaying action secondary. My secondary was 'field test', so I was boned as soon as the mortar bit it. He got primary and attrition - I was seriously wiped off the board. Scouting dogs are mean. The new hero type allows you to take a Veteran detachment with 6 dog squads and a dog hero - LOTS of puppies! The new Tesla mortar is my friend - gotta use me some of those more often.
A great game. I never know what John is going to field. Next time my Soviets will kick his ass all over the shop.
