Saw the movie today and quite enjoyed it. Having not been terribly familiar with the 1944 plot to kill Hitler, I can't speak to the historical accuracy, but they definitely made a decent thriller. Everyone does a good job in the movie, though by no means amazing, but overall my wife and I really enjoyed it.
Anyone else see it?

Every time the commercial comes on, and Tom Cruise says, with absolutely no attempt at a German accent, "We have to kill Hitler!" I crack up.

They followed the same idea as Hunt for Red October where they transition from 100% German to 100% English in the first few minutes of the movie. A great way to get around American and British actors attempting to pull off a German accent. -Matthew

Five Words: Robin Hood Prince of Thieves Nothing is worse than actors with bad accents. Hell, even Alan Rickman didn't sound convincing as a British noble in that movie

Defiance is coming out soon, about Russian resistance against the Germans. Everyone has a Russian accent. I for one prefer the Hunt For Red October/Valkyrie style, they let you know in the first minute these characters are speaking another language, then fade into English. I don't think actors need accents, only if they were actually speaking English within the movie.

More a drama than a suspense/thriller like Valkyrie, but definitely a good pic.

Finally stole some time and saw 'Valkyrie' today and thought it was pretty good. Even Tom Cruise wasn't annoying (and he does look the part).

I dunno, the accent thing was one of the problems I had with 'Enemy at the Gates'. Why is it that the voice actors in Call of Duty can affect a Russian accent but Jude Law can't? The argument for them all speaking English is valid but what if there was a movie that took place in feudal Japan and all of the samurais spoke with thick southern accents? It would take you out of the experience. I honestly don't mind subtitles and everyone speaking the language they are supposed to in historical movies, but then again, I'm in the minority in that regard. That was one of the cool things about Jet Lee's 'Fearless,' all the Chinese people spoke Chinese, all the Japanese people spoke Japanese and the Americans and British spoke English.

...but what if there was a movie that took place in feudal Japan and all of the samurais spoke with thick southern accents? Depends on if it was Southern Japan, really, doesn't it? I think movies should be in the language of the local they're situated in. Let the actors earn their x million dollar fees!

I meant thick American Southern accents, as in "Hey 'yall, I fight for honor of the daimyo, ya heard?" And also, why is it that no one in "The Rescuers Down Under" have Australian accents? They aren't even supposed to be speaking a different language. That is just lazy. But I digress. To get back on to WW II, this is another reason Clint Eastwood rocks. He marketed a movie that takes place from the Japanese pint of view, and they all speak Japanese *gasp*!
