...ended poorly for me. But that's okay, because it got my buddy interested in AE WWII. We had got together for one last gaming session before I took off for training to deploy to Iraq (I type this in Camp Lejeune, NC aka the arm pit of America). As I walked in with my shinny new models, he asks me "what is that big monkey for?"
"AE WWII" was my reply.
He was skeptical at first because he was under the impression that it was a straight historical game. He, unlike I, is not much of a fan of the wackiness. I spent years trying to get him to play Deadlands with me, to no avail. He humored me none the less, however and picked the American airborne due to them only having one suite of power armor and no other experimental units. The detachments are the ones on this thread: darksondesigns.proboards21.com/index.cgi?board=troop&action=display&thread=1854 the only difference being that I took a sniper with Assassin and a WA46 rather than the doc. We just used the terrain we had set up for an earlier game of 40k, which was fine, but that meant he had a nice building to shoot out of and I had somewhat of a field I had to run through. Needless to say, the BAR gunner and bazooka team, along with some help from Richey-Rich the officer gunned down my abominations with little regard for how their emaciated mutters and strumvaters would feel. Very appropriately, my secondary objective was to keep all of my abominations alive while his was to kill all of my abominations. So long story short, I lost. Bad. But that's okay, because my buddy found out that you don't need the wackiness to win so if you don't like those units, don't use them. He really enjoyed the game and was impressed by the community support and the fact that you could use any appropriate models. I gave him my plastic Tamiya Americans and Germans to run demos and try to build interest in the area so hopefully by the time I get back there will be a group of players. Now if only there was a distribution company that carried it in central Florida, the store could stock it and we'd be set.
