So... I've just ordered the rulebook from a local(ish) online store (hope it gets here before christmas!) and I'm waiting on some 'impulse' purchases, namely the Greatcoated German Officer and the Kreighund Squad. Now I need to know what else to get before I blow anymore of my hard earned christmas bonus! Thats where you guys come in... I'm looking to do a more 'historical' SS detchment. I obviously already have an officer and the doggies, what else? I would like to add some infantry, probably the German Troopers and maybe the sniper. If I were to do a 'command' detachment could I add the female NCO and a Kubelwagen and have a playable force? I also like the Werewolf, is he usable with the above setup? Thanks in advance

"Historical" / "werewolf" = an interesting mix!

I know your looking for historical but I have found that the Rholingsoldat is very, very good. With the MG42 its an infantry's worst nightmare. And the Mad Doktor with the Strumaffe or Emaciated soldiers is a killer as well. As for historical, the Greatcoats, Sniper and NCO are good choices.

Download issue #11 of Over the wire www.darksondesigns.com/overthewire.html and read it until you get the rulebook. This contains sample detachments. If you look at the section on command detachments, the example given contains 3 hero units and an armored car. If you've got a kubelwagen instead you could use 4 or five units. The officer, krieghund, sniper and some infantry would work. You could use the NCO as well.

As for the Werewolf, there are a couple of units you would also need to take if you wanted to field one (both from the Occult bool). Once again, that is explained in OTW11

Thanks for the advice guys! I thought the Werewolf would be a no-no at the moment, I just like the model! ;D I assume the occult units are in the new Occult book (think I'll stick with the 'core' rules to start with!).
In terms of the background (bear in mind I don't have the rulebook yet!) what are the main differences between the SS, the SD and the Weirmacht? Obviously the SS has become obsessed with the Occult, but where do vampires come into it? I'd see them as being part of the traditional army as at the time it was still very much class based. Are there still tensions between the army and the SS in the AE-WWII universe?

In the Occult book there are rules for regular SS infantry, snipers, and heavy weapons team as well as all of their occult goodies. The core book has all of the Wehrmacht and SD units. In the background, the SD has split off from the SS and now handles all of the experimental units (Emaciated Troopers and the like) whereas the SS has the Werewolves (one was captured in the Black Forest and used to make more) as well as demon-possessed soldiers and Vampires to name a few. If you want a straight historical force of SS, you still can easily do that and it will be strong, too. SS units are a little better than their Wehrmacht equivalent but you suffer greater penalties to your attrition as you start taking casualties (one of the three objectives for every scenario, attrition is explained fully in the core book.) The SD and SS will not work together at all, and as such you can not include units from both factions in the same detachment. There may still be some resentment there between the Wehrmacht and the SS but they will still work with them.

Thanks for the info xGIxJOKERx. I think I'll concentrate on a Wehrmacht based force to start off, maybe add some SS units later, once I've got to grips with the rules.

For starting with the Wehrmacht, I'd suggest getting together four Wehrmacht soldiers (I prefer the higher rate of fire of the StG44,) an Officer, and maybe a heavy weapon (MG42 for suppressing the enemy, Panzerschreck for hard targets.)
That should keep you busy when you're not reading the exquisite AE background, a great read which will answer all your other questions.

Cheers for that Scorpio. Do you use another companies miniatures for your heavy weapons teams as Darkson don't appear to do German heavy weapons! I'm not sure I like the look of the Rohlingsoldat.
