THE FIST OF KHONSHU
After the explosion of Vesuvius, all sides of the conflict greenlit many occult projects, desperately seeking the edge up on the enemy. Archaeologists, magicians, and other colorful sorts scoured the far-off corners of the globe for artifacts and relics, spending night after night chasing down shadows and silently looking to outmaneuver their counterparts and claim the crucial rumors of the next key to the puzzle.
The desert sands of Africa held many such secrets, and both the SS and the OORD sent the best and the bravest to scour the dunes. Back-alley deals with the locals led to illegal digs overnight, and many tombs were plundered by moonlight.
The OORD received a report from northern Africa of a British soldier with a miraculous tale. He reported that one night in 1942, he stumbled across a temple with 'strange statues.' The next day, he said a German minefield was swallowed up by a earthquake, as he saw a vision of one of the statues in the sky.
The OORD sent Dr. Horace Findley on an excursion to Egypt to uncover what happened. He brought two of his grad students with him, and was assigned an American detachment to get him there.
Rachel Roberts, the younger of the two students, was an easy choice. Findley knew her parents and brother were killed in the destruction of New York, and she was eager to do anything she could to slow the enemy's advance. On the trip overseas, days not spent reading up on Egyptian legends were spent with eager G.I.s teaching her basic fighting skills.
Two months passed in Cairo, with secret meetings and hushed research. Finally, intelligence pointed them to a hidden 'temple of the new moon' that the SS was planning to investigate. Findley, Rachel and their escort struck out within the hour to beat the Germans there.
When they reached the plateau at dusk, however, they walked right into a trap. German spies had uncovered the OORD investigation, and decided to lay them low. The Army troops bravely held them off as long as they could, but were quickly overwhelmed. Rachel's escort was killed buying her and Findley time to make a break for the temple entrance, but Findley was cut down by stray fire from a German MG-42, the same burst that lodged three bullets in her chest.
Dying, she crawled her way to the massive stone gate, flanked with falcon statues, that lead into the silent structure. She tumbled down the steps just as the moon broke over the horizon, and the last thing she saw was a statue of some forgotten god looming over her...
The Army troops that arrived at the site of the battle reported no sign of her, other than a trail of blood leading into the temple.
The next morning, as the moon rose again, she opened her eyes. Inexplicably changed, she found a white cloak with a silver crescent clasp folded neatly at the feet of the statue. She wrapped it around herself, woozy with confusion and nausea, and walked out into the night.
She wandered for what felt like weeks, forgetting days and nights, as she stumbled across the sand. The veil over her mind lifted when she found herself looking down from a sand dune at the same Germans who had killed her countrymen the night she died. And they were preparing another trap for a trio of American vehicles driving through the valley below.
The Germans prepared to strike, but at the last minute, a glint of moonlight reflected off their guns, alerting the Americans to their presence. Guns flared, and Rachel, not even knowing what was happening at first, started running.
Her body moved for her, guiding her silently into their lines. And her fists, seemingly guided by the spirit of Khohshu himself, exacted a terrible price. She struck quickly and without mercy, and the SS lines broke quickly at the unexpected assault by the woman cloaked in white, flashing silvered weapons.
The battle folded quickly. The Americans were amazed to find her, standing amidst the fallen Germans, half-dead from exhaustion and exposure. But they knew to contact the OORD when they saw her wounds slowly knitting themselves back together. Khonshu was not done with her yet, His new priestess. His Fist.
Back with the OORD, she is learning to control her newfound powers and find her place in a world she had left behind, only to be brought back.
