I recently attended a historical gaming convention here in Adelaide and had a ball. Unfortunately, since its focus was purely historical, games such as AE-WWII (and other worthy examples) didn't rate a mention.
So I've committed to running a game for next year's convention using AE-WWII rules but making it purely historical - i.e. turning the weird-o-meter down to 0, but still using the elegant mechanics of my favourite ruleset.
My idea is to run a game based on the British raid on a radar station on the French coast, perched on the cliffs above the town of Bruneval. A small force of paratroopers lead by Major John Frost (of Arnhem fame) dropped into occupied territory the dead of night late in February 1942, bringing along with them a radar technician. One detachment was tasked with securing the beach, another was deployed to cut off German reinforcements and the third was to capture key components from a radar dish and return them to England for analysis. Once the radar dish was disassembled (with crowbars and rifle butts), the paratroopers made their way down to the beach where a squadron of naval landing craft were waiting for them. Not quite clockwork, but a resounding success none-the-less.
I thought to use three detachments of British forces using the rules described in OTW-9. I'll need to work out the game balance and have a few goes at playtesting various aspects of it, but I'm really looking forward to it.

That sounds really cool. I would love to see how it turns out.

And when the convention organiser's back is turned, I'll bring out my Rocket Troopers and Sturmaffen and crank the weird-o-meter back up to 11. Thanks for the offer of help Chris, much appreciated.

No problem!
And given enough notice, Rob might be able to give you some prize support.
I think the rules set has a lot to offer in historical games, especially running two detachments. Some of my favorite campaigns are when you have a bunch of straight detachments, fighting in a weird environment.
Cheers,
Chris
