Been a little quiet of late as I've mostly been painting and assembling a decent urban terrain collection to go with my new board, but lately when I've found myself making lists I've found myself more and more going for purely historical detatchments.
I still love the weird or the wierd war, but I've begun wondering how well AWWWII plays as a historical skirmish game. I've seen it recommended on several forums when people ask for rules suggestions on mostly historical wargaming sites. I guess it takes away some of the fun of strange and unusual units but from the way the game plays I see no reason why it wouldn't work for weird war free gaming.
I'm getting ready for a series of games to test out a British Airborne Reccce platoon using another rules set, but knocking up a 2 detatchment list with much the same models I must say it looks like a damned fine list to play. 15 or so Airborne and a couple of jeeps, with some Dutch resistence for spice.
So, has anyone any experiences of using AEWWII without the first W?

Yes! It's one of my favorite ways to play it. I love the occult details in the game. I love the scitech stuff too. But playing a straight game is a lot of fun. The dogs and snipers really come into their own when you take away the weird. The campaign rules make more sense too. There is always a 1/3 chance of your best guy getting KIA if you let him constantly lead from the front. So in a real campaign you will be careful and not expose a hard bitten srgt unnecessarily.
One thing to add to this is that no cyber monkeys still leaves plenty of room for weird. Pulp fiction is a lot bigger than Nazi mystics.
Be sure to post what you do and if you recreate any historical conflicts.
Cheers,
Chris

You could play your historical list as a group of normal guys who have experienced all. So that when you have opponents play the weird, sci, or pulpy stuff, you've still got a background in place as to why you aren't running any of that "weird" stuff.

I've run a mundane list once or twice and it's perfectly viable. In fact I've done very well with a grizzled US Paratrooper Detachment. Sent "AGAIN" behind the lines to deal with the latest German monsters.

Yep, some players in my group and I have played purely non-weird detachments and they hold their own against weird faction. That's one of the beauties of the AE-WWII system, you can customize the level of weirdness and it's still quite viable.

It's certainly an unsung asset of the rules system that it can be played 'straight' so to speak.
I wonder if a stripped down historical only set of the AE rules would ever be an option ? It might help widen the player base and lure in a few of the 'if it didn't happen, it shouldn't have rules' brigade.
Oh and as for my Germans, the initial detatchment will almost certainly be Experimental. I need a break from painting 'pure' WWII colour schemes before I go loopy ;D

Sounds like a request for a historical campaign ;D

Sounds like a request for a historical campaign ;D Definitely! I think it would work very well and be a nice change of pace. Maybe an Over the Wire devoted to 'straight' WW2? I've also been working on some Commando/SaS detatchments. Pretty easy to do using OS agents, counter cultists and upgraded veteran infantry.

Have you used the British airbourne? Have had a good deal of luck with them and a Lovat scout/sniper

British Airborne are the core of my foce, I love them They are a very solid force. I have 2 Lovat snipers but have not yet used them both together. Mostly I use masses of Airborne with Bren support and officer heavy. Love vehicles too, mostly jeeps. It's nice to have the option to mix things up a little.
