Last night we had another enjoyable game of AEWWII, a follow up to the battle between MoAA Agents and rogue British occult forces over the chapel of Joan of Arc.
This is the MoAA briefing for the mission.
"Frau Bitterlich escaped the massacre of her agents at the Chapel d’Arc and her whereabouts are now unknown. The rogue MoAA Agent, Major Dust, was captured alive and convinced to switch sides. He is now a valued though wary member of your team.
You now have the bones of Joan of Arc and are determined to return them to London where they can be handed over to the leader of the Free French.
The leading scholar on the life of Joan, Doctor Levalle, also happens to be a leading member of the French resistance. He double life has been revealed by a double agent and he is now on the run. Luckily you got to him before the Gestapo and SS could get their claws on him. Your mission is to escort him and the holy relics to a landing strip just outside the small village of Grentheville where a spy plane awaits to take them both across the Channel and to safety.
Things are not so simple however. Only a few miles short of the airstrip an ambush is sprung as Frau Bitterlich and her agents try to snatch back the bones. If she can also kill Doctor Levalle it will be a terrible blow to your cause. Both he and the relics must be saved.
A Major Victory if you get the Doctor and the relic off the far board edge.
A Draw if you get one or the other off the board.
A Major Defeat if you get neither."
The MoAA detatchment was small but powerful. The MoAA agent had a Djinn Bottle and Hand of Glory (which unfortunately was forgotten about for the whole game!). The Doctor had to be linked to a unit or individual and would activate with them. The bones of Joan were in the box and had to be carried by a model, which reduced movement and prevented shooting.
This is the table edge for the MoAA force. Their mission was the get the doctor and the relics off the far table edge. It would be tricky as the opposing Black Front force was tiny but they all had Hidden Deployment except for the sinister black car.
The Black Front force was very small but all heroes. The snipers also has Hidden Deployment from Scout special orders. Only the car was on the table at the start of the game.
The Black Front table edge.
Winning the initiative, the Lara Willoughby forces the Black Front to activate first revealing a lone sniper at the corner of the cafe at the end of the quiet street. He took aim at the motorbike at the far end of the road and with an amazingly lucky shot he took the bike out, shooting out the front tire and wrecking the wheel. ( he rolled a 6 for Damage resulting in a Str 11, 2W shot!)The rider picked himself up cursing, resigning himself to a battle on foot. The snipers ghillie suits were to prove an annoyance to the good guys throughout the battle.
The Doctor, escorted by stalwart Red Devils heads up along the edge of the stream, hoping to use the cover of the trees to stay out of trouble.
The second sniper reveals himself at the far corner of the same building as his team mate. They both had long lines of sight and with the ghillie suits would be hard to take out. He takes aim at the paras escorting the doctor but the bullet thuds harmlessly into a tree.
Frau Bitterlich springs her ambush. Shouting curses in German she sprints forward firing both her Vril enchanted pistols.
The hail of mystical lead proves too much and first one of the paras and soon after the Doctor fall to the ground, breathing their last as their blood stains the soil of the orchard. with the doctor down, the MoAA could only hope for a draw at best.
Realising the mission was close to disaster, Agent Willoughby takes control. Stepping cooly out from the cover of a tree she takes aim and BAM BAM, two bullets slam into Frau Bitterlich who slumps to her knees spitting blood and curses as she falls unconscious.
The MoAA agent clutches the plain dull bronze lamp tightly as he chants the name of the fell being who dwells within it. With a billow of oily smoke the Djinn appears, reluctantly bound to the agents will. The plan was that the djinn will try to get line of sight to the snipers and use his Paralyzing Gaze to Suppress them.
The snipers are heavily outnumbered but dominate the battlefield, shooting with deadly accuracy at anything brave enough to show their faces.
Almost unnoticed on the far side of the battlefield, a para team lugging the heavy crates that contain the bones of Joan make their way through the trees. They had been helped by the Djinns use of 'Desert Passage' to speed their way through the rough ground. The sinister black car roars down the street and off road, trusting to the skill of the driver to keep control and slam into the paras. However, the rugged ground proves too much and the car skids to a halt, wheels spinning (failed Handling check) The paras thank their lucky stars.
The game was moving quickly now as casualties grew. Next turn the car driver abandoned his vehicle and rolled out of the door, pistol blazing. With a lucky shot a para took a bullet to the shoulder and went down with a cry of pain.
Probably the most crucial moment of the game. One of the Black Front snipers had moved across the road and now had line of sight to the paras carrying the relic. He took aim as his last action and the turn ended. Initiative was rolled. If the MoAA won, the Djinn would use his unearthly powers to Suppress the sniper allowing the paras and the bones of Joan of Arc to escape to the airfield and a plane to England. If the Black Hand won, the sniper had an aimed shot lined up and a Keep on Moving Special Order. It was unlikely the para squad would survive.
The Black Front won initiative....two shots rang out, two red berets fell to earth. The Bones of Joan of Arc and the Dcotor would not be reaching London.
A fun battle with lots of swings and roundabouts. Both sides could have won. The bike going down without activating was a key moment, mirrored at the end by the final Initiative roll.
The MoAA Agents Hand of Glory could have proved crucial but was forgotten about and went unused. Used against the Snipers, the battle could have had a very different outcome.
Obstinate is a very nice ability for the Brits and has played a key role in two battles now. Vehicles have yet to play much of a part as they seem to explode without doing anything or run aground as the drivers get Ram Happy and vroom around cackling and driving over anything that moves.
The third and final part of the campaign will be back at the shrine of Joan of Arc as the Black Front perform a foul ritual and attempt to summon and corrupt the spirit of Joan herself!
