If you want some intensely effective modern armor, try this link: www.pinnaclearmor.com/body-armor/sov.phpThis may be too high-tech, but I think it's cool. A guy wearing this armor was shot 3 times with armor-piercing incendiary rounds from an AK-47 and he didn't even realize that he had been hit until after the battle.

IMO this body armoor looking too ordinary. Sharm of the pulp game is possibility of using something exotic, some weapon prototypes, foolish wears. Body armour is large part of model. This part is very characterfull and this is to shape the style. OK, may be several branches of armour development. Russians is prefer cuirass from light metall, Americans use a cevlar, Germans - something between.

British Glider Pilots wore a Vest of plate armor, and it wasn't anything as cumbersome as say the B-17 Waist Gunner armor. I'm sure if there are going to be genetically enhanced or drug enhanced or Alien influenced armies then the ability to develop body armor that is not overly bulky is and will be a non issue. Heck 15th century full plate weighed less than 45 pounds evenly distributed a fit man could do cartwheels in it. My Interceptor Body Armor with Sappi plates weighs about 40 pounds and yes it is heavy and hot and uncomfortable, but it will save my life so I wear it.
The question is material. Could the different armies invent a material such as kevlar that could stop even a medium sized caliber round? Since this is a fictional spin on history, why not. It's up to the developers to decide if they want a bullet stoping material to be discovered and used as body armor, and made light enough that regular troops can function normally in the field.

i think the question is money. i can see elite troops given armour or a rotation system (in the trenches of WW1 plate armour was issued to the man on guard but nobody else). However for grunts, particualy Americans and Russians who have the numbers it seems unlikely. The American is 101st so as a para he deserves it. The Germans with small manpower need armour. Everyone else should forget it though.
