To get things started, a basic primer on one concept that came out in developing the background.
Each of the races and cultures in the game have their own unique attributes and technologies. Not every warrior in the game aspires to own a medieval European inspired set of plate mail.
In fact the Elves have some very different ways of growing their armor.
The Elves in Faery have removed themselves from the world and exist in their own realm. One of their disciplines is the cultivation and husbandry of the insects that provide the silk and chitin necessary to make their armor. These elves assemble a very light weight and flexible suit of armor from molted pieces of exoskeleton and incredibly strong woven materials. A elvish warrior will spend hundreds of years grooming an insect so that they naturally molt the plates and pieces that fit together perfectly, and then each of the pieces are further worked and carved until each is a piece of art.
Their dark cousins in war torn Gobelyn are neither so lucky, nor so patient. They have formed a strange relationship with different species of insects, using themselves as the object of the insects feeding cycle. Gobelyn elves cover themselves with living pieces of armor, each an insect feeding off the elf. A typical sized warrior elf wears from three to five insects as armor, with the eyes, legs and limbs of the insect joining with the elf and the other insects to become a horrific form of protection. These insects are parasitic and the venom that is injected to dull their host's resistance to the feeding also acts to numb the warriors to pain. These elves have become immune to most of the effects of the poison the insects secrete, and even gain new strengths and abilities from the insect venom they're injected with that they use to surprise their enemies in battle.
Not every race has the same concept of armor, or the same need for armor, but all peoples seek protection against the coming struggle.
