In my campaign, we have always used the 135th Airborne as our “host Division”. The 135th was a Phantom division created to throw the Germans off in regards to D-day. In fact when ever we do “Alternate WWII” Scenarios we always use Phantom Divisions for the allies. The 135th has one of the coolest patches as well, a black widow on a yellow circle.
From the history of Darkson’s history, with the defeat at Normandy, one assumes the near total destruction of the airborne divisions ( maybe latter drops were canceled I.E. all the D-Day + reinforcement drops). 17th Airborne arrived in August ( Historically) in England so it would have been the only in tact US Airborne division.
Remembering that D-day was the first outing of the 101st and the battle on which its fame was built, I could see it becoming a black sheep division, much like the 106th after the bulge, often blamed for things beyond their control maybe even losing its airborne designation due to none jump qualified replacements. The 82nd on the other hand was the father of American Airborne Divisions Serving in Africa, Sicily and Italy and with the 504th still relatively intact ( 504th was not scheduled to participate in D-Day), so I could see it remaining a “first line unit”.
Now in my Campaign, this would be the situation that the 135th would be brought to life. Technically a already activated division, and not wanting to place highly valued and motivated assets into a morale sapped division ( I.E. 101st). The Army would build up 135th Airborne.
This is all just my opinion and I realize that My opinion + 1.25 = a soda from the vending machine )
