So the concept artist is working on some ideas for the mounted SS. What types of gear should they carry and what type of uniforms should they have?

Hello,
if you are aiming for a "late war game", cavalary was useless. The only interesting thing about horses were there flesh to eat .
Make a cool attack motorcycle ;D

It is a common misconception that cavalry units were "useless" in WW2.
In terrain not suited for mechanised warfare and against lightly-armed opponents, such as partisans, cavalry units were actually quite effective.
If you are aiming for somewhat realistic troops, just give them standard cavalry uniforms with riding boots and arm them with compact assault rifles or carbines.
If you are going for the "NBC-contaminated wastelands" look, be sure to outfit both the riders and the mounts with plenty of protection gear.
If you would like to go over the top: Why not some flamboyant officers in hussar uniforms with SS insignia? Or panzerfaust -armed Uhlans?

jonasholjer you are correct, but this is why I asked about the time frame. Cavalry unit in the streetfights of a nuclear outbombed Berlin in 1950 would be a little bit strange

Give the horses gasmasks as well as the troops. That would look sweet. Also, the troops should have some kind of SMG or carbine, preferably with a pistol grip so that you could have more "active" poses.

How about a "Road Warrior" style BMW with a side car that is nothing but a big chain gun?
BMW motercycle, of course.
