Hey there, I was looking at the troop type restrictions section of the force organization part of the rules and have a question, that I just can't find in these forums. So please forgive if it's been posted already. Here goes... I understand that if one were to exchange a unit in a detachment, that there are a number of things you can get in return for it. I understand them all except for exchanging it for a lower training level unit. Why would one do that? I ask because it says that the unit you pick must still adhere to any detachment restrictions that were originally placed on it before. So if I can't pick some other unit outside those restrictions, and all my choices have to be of a certain requirement, why would one pick that same restricted choice as you had before only this time pick one of a lower training level? Why wouldn't you keep your original training level choice? There's got to be something I'm overlooking or missing in my reading of that section. I hope you understand my question Many thanks

To trade in an Elite choice for another Veteran choice for instance. So if you were playing the Germans and didn't want the SD Agent you could take an additional Veteran choice instead. Since many of the Vet choices allow for a free upgrade to Elite it allows you to get an Elite choice without using the pre-existing Elite choice in the army

It does seem illogical, doesn't it? There are few cases where you'll want to use this option, but I can think of one or two: In case of units that can't have their traning level increased (robots, sturmaffe) you might want to exchange a higher level slot to buy the unit, or if you don't want to spend your elite choice on an individual, but would rather have a veteran squad. But your right, it isn't a very commenly used option. To trade in an Elite choice for another Veteran choice for instance. So if you were playing the Germans and didn't want the SD Agent you could take an additional Veteran choice instead. Since many of the Vet choices allow for a free upgrade to Elite it allows you to get an Elite choice without using the pre-existing Elite choice in the army I think you've misunerstood the rules Pixelgeek. When the unit description says that a model may be upgraded to elite it doesn't mean that it is free to upgrade, but that it has the option. For example, when a German Mad Doktor is a veteran choice with the option of upgrading to eilte status, it means that you can take the Mad Doktor as veteran, spending a "veteran slot" on him, OR you can take him as elite, spending an "elite slot" on him. You cannot simply spend a veteran slot and then freely upgrade him to elite. So, if you want an elite Mad Doktor, you'll have to spend your Elite slot on him. Trading in your elite choice to buy a veteran individual wouldn't make sense if the veteran already has the option of becoming elite.

Is it. I've been playing it differently. I thought first of all you had to buy the model with say a veteran slot, and then give up another slot so that you then upgrade him to Elite rather than just use the Elite slot on him. Hmm
And so it's not complete hijacking of the thread. Yeah it does seem a bit strange but it's done for things like if you want an entire army of robots or things as generally lower training levels of troops get more troops for your slot, so you could just have a great big horde army.

Hmm It's explained under the 3rd paragraph of the 1st page under "Force Organization". We should really have a faq spefically for the detachment system, seems we all have different interpretations of how it works And so it's not complete hijacking of the thread. Yeah it does seem a bit strange but it's done for things like if you want an entire army of robots or things as generally lower training levels of troops get more troops for your slot, so you could just have a great big horde army. Like that guy who build a pure rocket trooper army? ;D A robot army would be cool too, like in the terminator movies. (Of course, you'd have to find a leader modeled like governator Schwarzenegger) ;D

I think you've misunerstood the rules Pixelgeek. When the unit description says that a model may be upgraded to elite it doesn't mean that it is free to upgrade, but that it has the option. I had this clarified by Matt last week. So either Matt misunderstood my question or I didn't phrase it correctly but that was my understanding of his response. I used to play it the way that you are mentioning and was told that this was wrong. It came up in the context of me posting a detachment list and being told that I could promote units to Elite status for free

The FAQ has been updated, it just hasn't been uploaded yet. Once it is, that should clarify the problem.
In regards to the original question, tord is absolutely right; there are some models (like the Buffalo) that can't be upgraded beyond Veteran, so sacrificing an Elite slot would give you an additional Veteran (or Regular, or Green) that could be used for one of these kinds of units.
Not something you'll do often, but we felt that added option was something that might find a use somewhere.

But there are also units that, as noted in their description, can be upgraded to Elite as long as that elite slot is not filled and this does not cost an upgrade option correct?

So the rule is put in for those that WANT lower training level units for whatever the reason, correct?
BTW, where are the FAQs?

Sometimes having more bodies to accomplish a task can be more important than just how good those bodies are in a fight. A fluffy fight of regular and green GI's with an Officer and a Sergeant also gives a lot more options for cool stories. While it might not be the prime choice for a tournament, AE is more about cool stories and battles than exacting tournament play.

Sorry to drag this up yet again but I need some further assurances I'm doing this right. I'm possibly just being too glaekit to understand the intricacies of the system. I've read the FAQ and from what I can see there are two kind of upgrades. There is the slot upgrade and the troop upgrade. For the slot upgrade you use two slots, so say you had a green slot and a regular slot. You could sacrifice the green slot to upgrade the regular slot to a veteran. You could then take a veteran troop choice with this. Or you can take a troop upgrade. Take for example a Buffalo. If I decide to upgrade him to Veteran, instead of using a regular slot, I just use a veteran slot on him, and no sacrificing of another slot is required. Is this correct? Also could you then combine these in a way. Upgrade one slot say to a veteran by sacrificing a green slot to upgrade a regular, and then fill it with an upgraded troop choice, such as the Buffalo example above.
