had an idea in a different thread - where's the pope in this game? maybe he didn't die, but is kept in a state of living death like the lass in marvel's 'amazing fantasy' death's head run right now... nslowly being rebuilt by strange, alien technologies... and one day, he will be reborn, and lead his people on a crusade to reclaim this wartorn world in the name of all that is holy... just an idea...

The Emperor of 40k is the pope!!! ;D
The idea of an Pope in cryogenics sounds interesting. Perhaps the Vatican has cloning technology in which they clone the Pope, hence they have the Pope and his copies running around. ;D

i reckon since it's only 1946, they wouldn't have the technology to bring him back... yet... instead he'd be in what is essentially a giant metal egg, with a little window in so that his devout followers may gaze upon his most holy of visages and a chosen few may kiss the frosted glass... eventually, as/when super/alien/occult technology is introduced, the pope would be rebuilt/reborn, leading a holy crusade of holy holiness and cleansing... (hopefully without getting as cheesy as battlenuns...)

Hmm but if the pope would be dead, or practically dead why try to preserve him, they would let him die naturally and then pick another pope. Now on who the next pope might be could be the interesting bit. Would it be a more pro axis or pro allied figure?

bah this way we get a cool pulp 'robopulp', and historical and factual accuracy be damned!

Hmm...the thing is though that the pope and the catholic church would be a very "minor" faction and not actually fighting a big religious war. Besides this Pope on a throne, waiting to wake up to wage a giant religious war is sounding way too 40k for my tastes, maybe darkson likes it though.

not neccesarily waiting to wage a religious war, but through the process of being rebuilt i guess anyone'd be pretty p'd off... that or outside influence from the 'builders' (hmmm.... the pope as a puppet for shadow nephilim... or cthulhu reaching into his dreams while he slumbers...)

Hmm...and how would the covert war within the Vatican happen? Some factions sides with the aliens and other dont? I think we seriously have to prevent the idea of humans vs. aliens in this game.

How about this...the Pope was tampered with by the Germans (who controlled Italy) using their crazy medecine. However a Cardianal and variety of secret organisations (Templars, Hospitallers, Teutonics, Knight of Santiago etc) are against the 'evil' Pope. This ties in with Darksons occult backround- Pope and demons versus Cardianl and priests.

I think that the Vatican would have a small force of "Holy Agents" (Templars, Hospitallers, Teutonics, Knight of Santiago etc) that would fight in the "Occult War Front" keeping evil from further entering the world. Now this could be played as a Templars, Hospitallers, Teutonics, Knight of Santiago Hero that leads a force of Joe's or we could have a few Special units/troops designed and properly equipped to fight this new "Occult Front".
The games could be a "Witch" hunt if you will. With the church going after anyone practicing or dabbling in the Occult. With this type of mind set we would be able to have games between the Pope forces and any army that includes any type of Occult troop whether that be German, American, Russian etc.......

on the whole tampered pope front, if we cut out the idea of aliens and leave it as mysterious occult forces, it could run something like this: you believe the pope is not the man he once was. thousands of devout catholics rever him. do you lead a rebellion against all that you yourself hold true, or do you keep quiet about what you know, and hope everything pans out for the best? faction 'warfare', but covert, since you can't really shout 'the pope is being pumped full of combat drugs by those canny germans who sent in a special ops fraulein disguised as a nun' without being executed on the spot...

We could have the Vatican as an ally for the bigger fractions, like witch- and daemon hunters in WH40K, with swiss guard and templars as elite units.

good idea - then as time (and continuity) progresses they can come into their own as a force...

I would put them way later in line then, first we need the basics: US, Germany and Russia. Then it will probably be Japan. After that other factions (I assume) such as the UK, Finland, France and Italy. I doubt all of them would by then have full armies, but I think priority should be given to that kind of stuff.
The Vatican can be included but not really as an army yet, the covert war could be included but then with the other factions actually fighting. Just seems very odd to see the Vatican fighting their own wars.

the vatican war thingy was just an offshoot of the original idea - namely 'where is the pope in this setting?'
