For those of you planning to attend GenCon this year, what is it about the tournament that you're not interested in. My initial thoughts are: the fully-painted detachment requirement, the six-hour time commitment, a lack of interest in competitive play and the lack of posted rules for the tournament. Fully-painted: Doesn't bother me a bit, I paint all my stuff anyway. Six hours: Not an issue. If you enjoy something, why wouldn't you want to do it for a long time? I'm in longer events for other games. Competitive play: Bring it on! My feeling is that you learn more in a competitive atmosphere. However, I'm too new to the system to make any judgments about game balance issues that might arise. Lack of posted rules: OK, this is a potential drawback. If I don't know the rules/scenarios/etc... then how am I to construct my force? I might need to buy models and get them painted in time. I might want to get in some practice games with that army so I'm prepared to take on a high level of competition. For me though, the ultimate reason is that I have an event conflict. I simply cannot be in two places at once. It's always an issue with longer events such as tournaments. Instead I'm going to try to get into the 11:00am session on the 13th.

Looking forward to the Con and the competitve tournament. But since I am redeploying from Afghanistan at the end of July, I may or may not have the time to have all of my detachment painted, I hope this does not offend anyone or preclude me from playing...

The main reason I'm not in the tourney is time. At least at Gencon, 6 hours is a bit much to devote to just one game. If I could go to multiple cons, then time wouldn't be a problem as I could play those other games some other time. But this is virtually the only con I can go to so have to sacrifice. I am attending a Thur and both Fri games. And I'm hoping to maybe get in on a Sunday Bounty game if there is room.
The other reason is the tourney competition. I've attended numerous tournaments and the vast majority of them I've disliked because of the lack fun I was having. I just don't like the tournament environment of "must" win because that invariably, for me, brings the fun playing my opponent down because they are so focused on winning. I'm sure some live for tourneys though. If I play against someone for fun, then its usually a great time, but add the must win to advance aspect on it, um, not so much. Thus I don't attend tournaments anymore.
For me, I'd vote for more "regular" events. ;D

Save some time for you and I to get a game in. ;D We will keep it a friendly Army vs Air Force game.

Well we are getting closer so who is going to start the smack talking? I should be able to fit a few games in if anyone want to step up.

To the people that think competitive campaigning (tournament) systems are not fun are mostly thinking of the whole Games Workshop or Privateer Press way of things. I have met and talked to our awesome mods when they ran the demo for the game two or so years ago was it? They have nothing but enthusiasm for the game. They would not introduce a concept into the game that they didn't think would be fun for quite a few people (you could never truly please everyone).
Though i did not get a chance to register for the tourney, i'm hoping that maybe i can show up and participate or at the very least support from the side lines. As of now i didn't even register for any events so i'm going stag to gen con. I'm doing my part to try and introduce this game to a store that I frequent to give me that push to paint up enough models to play for the tourney.

I don't think it's competative campaigning per se (I think "per se" should also be italicised...) but the change that seems to come over people at tournaments. It's like a license to become annoying or something.

Every skirmish game tourney that I have been to I haven't had that problem of people arguing rules or being poor sports about the game. I guess I am one of the lucky few lol.

So now that you've put the GM responsibilities on someone else's shoulders you're feeling like a big man? Typical. ;D Anyway, my combat engineers are signed up for the competitive tourney now. See you all there!

We will see about that. I think Mike will be looking for a rematch. Besides it doesn't count if my losses are to you. You wrote the F-ing rules.

I'll take a shot if you have time. I'll even buy a psi cannon team if you would happen to have an extra lying around. ;D

Are we allowed to use minis from other companies? To represent (converted of course) things from AE? Like jeeps, MG 42's etc?
